Ericeira is a World Surfing Reserve with a world-class surf area of 8
kilometers of coastline! Located next to Peniche, Ericeira is known as
Portugal’s surf Mecca.
This typical fishing village offers a long coastline of outstanding
natural beauty open to the Atlantic Ocean, with a rich cultural and
religious heritage. Ericeira is also famous for its cuisine offering
several seafood restaurants, its singular monuments, the characteristic
housing and the narrow cobblestone streets.
This world known destination offers surf spots for all levels and
skills, but unlike Peniche, many of these surf spots have rocky bottom
and are poorly protected.
The climate is mild, winter is not too cold and summer has pleasant
temperatures. It is an excellent surfing destination throughout the
year, being the southern beaches best option for summer and northern
reef breaks for the rest of the year.
Ericeira is must for your surf trip, we offer all kind of accommodation
ranging from surfcamps, surf hostel and surf houses to camping hotels
and apartments. Get ready to enjoy one of the best surfing spots of all
Europe!
Backdoor: his wave is not mentioned in the reserve but is also
found on Empa beach. This right-hander, left of Reef, is easier to ride.
It is a very consistent wave and functions best on a low or mid tide.
It provides good speed to set up maneuvers and on perfect days there are
many tubes to be ridden. Intermediate surfers will enjoy this wave a
lot up until a meter.
Coxos: located in the north of Ericeira, Coxos is one of the best
known waves of all Portugal. Coxos is considered to be the best right
hander in Europe because of its consistency, length and perfection. The
wave is tubular and breaks over a flat rock. There are many sea urchins
so you have to be careful with going in and out of the water. It works
best on a low tide and is only suitable for more experienced surfers.
Coxos is the sixth wave of the reserve. The best swell direction is from
the
north northwest and the best wind direction is coming from Southeast.
This surf spot can be often crowded.
Crazy Left: located on the south side of coxos bay, it is
left-hand reef break with hollow and fast waves. It is recommended to
surf in this spot only with high tide or rising. The ideal swell angle
is from the southwest and works best in offshore winds from the east.
Foz do Lizandro: located 5 minutes from the centre of Ericeira,
it is a cozy beach that offers a good central peek that generates good
rights and lefts hand waves and minors peaks. Waves are fun and this is a
favourite spot for surf schools, ideal for beginners. The best swell
direction is coming from the southwest and the best wind direction is
coming from east.
Pedra Branca: located in the north of Ericeira, it is one of the
few left hander reef break in Ericeira. If Coxos is considered "king of
the waves" of Ericeira, than this wave on the south end of Empa beach,
is definitely the "queen". The fast take-off into the barrel reminds you
of Pipeline, Hawaii. It is surfed on high tide and is only
recommendable for experienced surfers. The best swell
direction is coming from the southwest and the best wind direction is
from the east.
When perfect it’ll get crowded. Count on localism.
Praia do Norte: located in Ericeira it is a very popular beach
break that offers both right and left hand waves. It works best around
high tide. The best conditions are when the swell is coming from the
northwest and offshore winds from the east. Can be a good alternative
when all the famous spots are ultra-crowded.
Reef: located in the north of Ericeira, this surf spot is a reef
break that offers a powerful, fast and hollow left hand wave. The best
swell direction is from the northwest and works best around mid tide
when the tide is rising. It is a very popular spot and can get very
crowded. Be careful with urchins and rocks.
Ribeira d'Ilha: located in the north of Ericeira, is one of the
most popular surf spot in Portugal. There are several peaks in the bay
of Ribeira d ´Ilhas. They are all right handers and there can be found a
wave suitable for each level. The bottom is rocky but the waves break
in deep water. The waves are known for their length and can be surfed on
all tides. It is good to surf here in our company because it gets
pretty crowded. Ribeira D´Ilhas is the third wave of the reserve. The
reef break provides a powerful
and long right hand wave that can reach up to 500 meters while the beach
break offers both right and left hand waves. The best wind direction is
