Carrapateira is a small village on the western coast of the Algarve, Portugal. It lies 22 miles by road northwest of Lagos and 68 miles northwest of Faro. Carrapateira is the less touristic surf destination in Portugal and is set within the Costa Vicentina Natural Park, which is a protected area of national beauty. It is a lightly populated area where you can find beautiful beaches with excellent surfing conditions.
The Algarve is a year round destination and surf is really consistent in this area. Only 5 minutes drive from the village you can find Bordeira beach, one of the best, as well as one of the most beautiful beaches in the south of Portugal; a sandbar breaks that offers lefts and rights-hands waves. Little further south you find Praia do Amado, widely known as one of the top surfing spots in Europe, is a popular hangout for all seasons. Praia do Amado beach is also a regular host to several surfing and body-boarding competitions, including local and international surfers. ALGARVE BEST SURF SPOTS:
Amoreira: located close to Aljezur town Amoreira is a beach and
point break with quite consistent surf. The beach break offers both
right and left hand waves. The best wind direction is from the
southeast, while the best swell direction is from the west. It is not a
crowded beach and it is suitable for surfers of all levels.
Arrifana: located close to Aljezur, it is one of the most
consistent surf spots in Europe. This beautiful beach offers mailnly two
surf spots. A beach break with fun and hollow left and right hand waves
and a reef break that can offer great and powerful waves suitable for
advanced surfers. Ideal winds are from the northeast and the ideal swell
direction is from the northwest. It is a very popular surf spots among
the surf schools in Algarve.
Beliche: located in Sagres, Beliche is a beautiful sheltered beach. With
the ideal conditions it offers a fast and hollow left hand wave. The
ideal swell direction is from the northwest and works best in offshore
winds from the north. You need to walk a long stair downwards to access
the beach.
Carrapateira: located in Carrapateira village, it can be a
world-class surf spot when gathers good conditions. It is a river break
surf spot with both left and right hand waves. The best swell direction
is from the northwest and works best in offshore winds from the
southeast. It is not a very crowded spot and is suitable for advanced
surfers.
Monte Clerigo: located close to Aljezur village, it is a river
break that offers both, left and right hand waves. Works best around mid
tides. The best swell direction is coming from northwest and winds from
south and southeast.
Praia do Amado: located close to Aljezur is undoubtedly one of
the most beautiful and popular beaches in the south. It is a spot that
offers great waves, both lefts and rights. It is ideal for learning as
well as for more experienced surfers. It is very popular in summer. The
ideal conditions are with offshore winds from northeast. Works with all
tides.
Praia do Bordeira: located close to Carrapateira village, it is a
fairly consistent beach break that offers both left and right hand
waves.The best swell direction is coming from Northwest and works best
in offshore winds from the southeast.
Praia do Castelejo: located cose to Vila do Bispo village, it is a
beach break that offers both left and right hand waves and is very
popular during summer season.The best swell direction is from the
northwest and ideal winds are from the southeast.
Praia do Cordama: located near Vila do Bispo, is another popular
beach of southern Portugal. It offers both left and right hands waves
and is suitable for surfers all levels and skills. Works with all
tides. The best swell direction is from Northwest and winds from
Southeast. Water temperature is quite freezing all year round.
Tonel: located near Sagres village, it is a fairly consistent
surf spot with good waves. The best season to surf here is in winter
when swell direction is from west / northwest and winds from northeast.

BEST SURF SEASON
Algarve is the perfect year round destination with excellent waves and fantastic weather.
The best surf season is spring and autumn. In winter the waves range
from 2-5 meters, while in summer is never flat and waves ranging from
0.8 to 1.5 meters.
